I'm gearing up to get blogging again (lots of things to blog about!), but have been trying to give my blog a home makeover. When I view my blog on my PC, it looks fine, however, on my laptop, the header gets cut off by my blog posts. Is that what you are seeing? Do you have any tips/suggestions for how to fix this? I will look into it, but I thought one of my brilliant blogging friends may be able to help! Can't wait to blog to my heart's content!

Blogging and other Things on My Heart
Posted on 21:06 by Unknown
How I do love to blog.
I look at it as something I do for myself.
Like taking a hot bath.
Or getting a pedicure.
That's how much I love it.
It's my opportunity to express myself, record my memories and be creative all in one.
I get to write poems, (try to) be funny and extract those emotions that are running rampant inside my heart.
One other bonus: your comments! I love reading them. They make my day sometimes. Did you know that?
I also love, love, love to read your blogs. I'd like to name all my favorite blogs here, but I don't want to leave anyone out... because your words really make a difference!
They influence me.
They make me laugh.
They make me think.
Your blogs are truly wonderful and delightful.
They inspire me in many different ways.
I have this habit of thinking in terms of blog posts. I'm sitting there actually experiencing a moment, thinking... boy, I'm gonna have to blog this. Sometimes, the title jumps right into my head at the very moment.
For instance, today,
I was itching to get to the computer to blog about this picture... My wild child daughter decorated herself with a fancy mustache, unibrow and chest hair. Don't ask me where she gets this stuff.
I also have wanted for a long time to share with you about our two aquatic pets: a red eared slider turtle and a catfish. I mean, who has a pet catfish? We even have a stocking for him.
I also wanted to tell you that I try to be real careful in the mornings not to wake turtle up. If I come in to the laundry room (where he stays), and I can see he's all tucked up into his shell, I just cannot turn on the light and jolt him into his 10 gallon aquarium of reality. I mean, that's not how the sun comes out, instantaneously, and I guess out of respect for mother nature, I try to tread lightly around turtle in the mornings.
I'd love to tell you that a week ago,
I was running up to my sister's door (it was COLD!) and tripped and fell HARD knee-first on the edge of her concrete step. I don't think my knee will ever be the same, but what is really bothering me is that I put a hole in the one pair of skinny jeans I have. Ok, I am not skinny; however, they are the closest thing to a skinny jean I will ever have... they look good tucked into boots and with my BFL diet, I was actually feeling semi-cute in them... and then, the only pair of true designer jeans I own... ripped. I have seen pics of celebrities in ripped jeans, but I guarantee you they paid money for special rips. Sigh.
I'd like to share with you that we're having a rough basketball season.
It hasn't been this rough in quite a few years. I guess that's something to be thankful for -that our last few seasons have been good ones-, but it is H.A.R.D. to watch your husband and his players lose game after game. It's difficult to listen to his voice on the phone when we just got whipped and he won't say it... but I know that all he wants is to come home and see his family. It makes me anxious when we start losing so much, but ironically, it's the one thing that consistently gets me on my knees - right where God wants me.
Which brings me to my last point. As much as I love blogging -and tend to obsess-, I am going to take a bit of a break. I am feeling in my heart that as much as I love it (and it's ok to love it!), I need to take a step back from it and focus on the One who makes it All Possible.
I wonder (because of YOUR blog posts)... am I truly helping my children focus on the REAL meaning of CHRISTmas? Am I giving them opportunities to serve others? Am I spending enough time with my King? That's what I'm going to focus my heart upon right now - the birth of Christ - my Father, King, Savior, Protector, Rock.
Have a peaceful, relaxing, lovely and wonderful Christmas!!!

Testing, Testing
Posted on 07:04 by Unknown
*Cue Twilight Zone Music*Just checking to see if there is in credence in my reluctance to post about the games. Could it be possible that somehow, writing a blog post about an upcoming basketball game mystically lowers our chances of winning that game? Could my blog actually cause us to lose?
*Music grows louder*
Well, here goes. ORU has been paired up with Creighton in ESPN's bracket buster game. We play the Bluejays at home and everyone is very excited about this matchup. And to be honest with you, I really want to win. Well, I always want to win, but I really want to win this game for this reason: even though we have had an amazing run through our league thus far, (13-1), our team is still not recognized by people as a dangerous team. Even though we have beaten 2 out of 3 of the state's teams this year, people poo-poo us because of our conference. This win would be a start in bringing us some more respect.
*Music begins that scary, shrieking sound*
Stay tuned for the outcome of this story!!!

A Different and Daring New Look
Posted on 17:36 by Unknown
Hi friends! Thanks for checking on me! Have you ever gone out and bought a new dress for a special occasion and loved it. And then when you got home and tried it on, it really didn't flatter you the way you thought. And by the time the special occasion was upon you, you weren't sure if you liked the dress at all? Well if that hasn't happened to you, then you are definitely not living in my world. It happens to me a lot for some reason... buyer's remorse, questionable taste, or some weird kind of guilt... I don't know what it is. It happens to me in small matters (like this family blog) and big matters (my kitchen granite). But I must say after all the difficulty of getting this new look together, it is bright and different and represents our family pretty well. I thank Jessica at Cuppycake Designs for her time and patience in designing this. God bless her! I will be tweaking it over the weeks to come! Got to figure out how to get that sponge (it looks like butter or cheese too) off of the bottom of my posts!!! Postscript: The sponge is gone!

The Return of the CAMERA
Posted on 06:43 by Unknown
It is back. I cannot tell you how glad I am to have it home again. I do have to say, though, I learned a few things in the absence of my camera.
1) The value of journaling. In the past, I didn't post unless I had a picture to share. It has been cathartic to just write. Ironic I never have, since I do love writing so, but writing has been nice.
2) In the absence of my camera, I have had to try harder to draw a picture with my words. It has renewed my interest in being a better writer.
3) In thinking about journaling, I looked back at some of the labels and realized that while I have accumulated several posts about our kiddos, a nice amount about Granny, several about ORU and plenty vacation posts, I had not one single post about Tom. Sure, I've mentioned him, but I have yet to share my thankfulness for this man in my life... what a great husband and father is. Maybe it's because deep down I know he's not the sharing type. He'd probably rather have the hair plucked from his chest or try on 5 shades of lipstick than bear his soul to the internet (of all things). But I do feel that a very important character from our lives is rather absent here on our family blog... soon to be titled "Having a Ball," and I want to try to put more emphasis on the man who is really the center of our lives. And since today is his birthday, it really is a perfect day to bring him up. Happy Birthday Tommy!
4) You don't know what got 'til it's gone. Ha! I always enjoyed my camera and valued it as one of my favorite earthly possessions, but I haven't really taken the time to properly learn how to take pictures. I ridiculously thought that if I bought the same camera as my favorite photographer, then I could take pictures like her. Ha! I'm going to have to work harder, read books, maybe take a class with my sister. Practice practice practice taking pictures. You are going to see nicer pictures on this blog.
5) I've always "excused" this blog to myself because it is a way to keep track of my family. It documents our daily activities and helps us remember the days that fly of the calendar. I think I felt guilty spending my time doing something for myself. But, I'm going to OK it. This blog can be for me too! Thus, the new and improved blog look coming soon!
6) Finally, I had improperly diagnosed my camera's problem. I have to retract my earlier statement about the camera (although the timing still seems awfully weird) and say that the problem was a "loose connection." Great that means the plastic pin is still destined to break?!? Here's hoping NOT.

A Confession (or 2)
Posted on 10:52 by Unknown
Ok, I admit it....
I HAVE been taking some pictures. Although I've been whining like a lost puppy about how bad I miss my camera, I must tell the truth. There's another camera. A little Casio that fits in my purse, walletlike. It is a fine camera. It takes nice pictures. I don't know why I didn't tell you about it to begin with. I'm sorry.
Also, since I'm in the confessional mode, I must tell you that I'm looking at changing my blog site, a-g-a-i-n. I've been checking out some different designs, so enjoy the dots while you can. Changes are being cooked up! I'm so excited! It's kind of like getting a new car! A whole new look is on the way to my blog.
And another thing, speaking of new cars, I got one. Today. Today! Or more accurately, shall I say, Tommy went and bought me one. I told him it was one of the very nicest thing anyone has every given me! After 8 years with the Green Bomb, Big Black Beauty is now living in our garage. The car is not new, but new to us, (Luke's age) and I have to admit, quite an upgrade. The best perk Green Weenie had was power windows, power steering and a decent heater. Oh yeah, and tinted windows. Woo-Woo. Although I am having a quite a struggle with new-car guilt (am I the only one?), I am going to do my best to enjoy the keyless entry (a great thing to have with kids), outdoor temperature display, (it is sometimes nice to know that yes, it really is 23 degrees outside,) and my very favorite: heated seats!!! (So nice when you get frozen bones like I do) And I am going to try not to think how bad the gas mileage really is.

A Blog Is Born!
Posted on 17:53 by Unknown
Two years ago I had no idea what a blog was. I just had some foggy notion that it was something that technogeeks did in cyberspace. About the same time, I became overwhelmed with my beloved hobby of scrapbooking. Although I absolutely loved doing it, I was trying to slap together five different books for three different kids and running about 2 1/2 years behind. I would rush to a scrapbook night and sweat like a crazy woman trying to get as many layouts done as scrapbookingly possible.
Then, (cue the piano music) my friend Kelly introduced me to digital scrapbooking and blogging. It was like we had won a big game. I felt elated! I felt free! I felt released from the scrapbooking dungeon. Since then, blogging has become a near-daily treat. Like a yummy Merritt's cupcake, I look forward to my blogging time. I know some people think it's strange; after all, I don't live in Dubai or have parents who live in a different town than I do. I really don't care what they think though... because when it comes down to it... this is for me! Blogging is a way for me to record the daily fragments of life that would otherwise get lost in the grind. You know how when you try to recall a moment from the past, you find yourself remembering pictures that were taken of that time? (At least that's what I do...). I am steadfast in the belief that I am rescuing memories from the shuffle of time. I have the vision that years from now, 5 years, 10 years, more, that we will be consulting this blog as a way to recapture our past, not only looking at pictures, but reading my personal thoughts as well. It is precious to me and I can only hope that in the future it will be precious-precious to my kids. With scrapbooking, I was always trying to catch up and had to squint my eyes trying to remember the specifics of the particular scrapbooking moment, but with blogging, I take 10-15 minutes to record something that happened that week or even THAT DAY! One final benefit... like scrapbooking was a creative release for me, so is blogging something that I enjoy. I get my creative writing fix, I guess you could say. Finally, although h-is-4 is for me, I am happy to know I have my faithful readers out there. I love it when out of town (or in town) family and friends check in! And comments, well, comments are always appreciated! All this to say that I am proud a new baby blog has been born. It is so big and beautiful, you might not know it is a baby at all, but please check in on my friend Chere, who has recently begun her blog. Oh, and one more thing... I had to chuckle when I walked in on Kami, who was creating her own blog. She had it all set up herself and only needed me to help her with the images. My own little technogeek! Ha! Check out Kami's first post here.

Welcome Back!
Posted on 21:12 by Unknown
Thanks to all of you who checked on us, making sure our family and our blog didn't fall off the face of the earth. What happened was that I had a cyber-stalker (probably just a little grandma in Minnesota) who was checking my blog multiple times a day. My mind got to imagining things (think man dressed in dark hoodie with mean, squnity eyes staring at pictures of my children) and.... it started weirding me out. So, I had to make this blog a little more anonymous, thus the address change. I have made a few other adjustments that make me feel more comfortable with a public blog. And now that I'm up and running again, I have nothing to blog! No pictures at least. So, I'm posting this fabulous poem by my "friend" Beth Moore. I have a link to her blog below, and here is a link to the lady who designed this "worship art." Beth Moore is an inspiration to me!
